Flat hats have seen a revival in recent times, and with good reason. They are warm and comfortable, but they are also classily elegant, and almost any well-dressed guy of any generation can pull one-off.
Unlike the bolder hat, flat hats offer a softer impression that is simpler and less daunting to mix with a variety of fall, winter, and spring ensembles.
Moleskin Fabric
Moleskin is a thick cotton fabric that has been woven and then sheared on one side to form a short, soft pile. Its nap has a suede-like texture and look, less smooth than velour but rather like felt or chamois.
The term is also applied to garments created from this material. Moleskin flat hats are known for their softness and durability. Some of the Moleskin hat variants are so thickly woven that they are windproof.
What is a Flat Cap?
A flat cap is a curved cap made of soft material with a modest, circular front brim. There are two construction styles that may be referred to as a flat cap. Because of the single-piece flat design of the dome of the hat, the first has a smooth, tidy silhouette.
To produce a triangular side view, the base of the hat is brought forward over the beak and either sewn or hooked to the upper portion of the brim.
The second type has a looser, more volumized profile achieved by stitching eight triangular sections of fabric together through a focal place on the top of the hat, which is concealed by a cloth button.
The body of the cap is similarly drawn forward over the brim, although not as much as its flat counterpart. This design is a flat cap, although widely referred to as a “newsboy” cap. In reality, the flat and newsboy caps are only two of the many names for this hat shape.
The Flat Cap’s History
Despite being a contemporary classic, the flat hat has been around for millennia. The forerunner of the flat cap, known as a “bonnet,” was used as early as the 14th century. Before the 17th century, the term “cap” was in usage.
Interestingly, the British Parliament intended to boost wool consumption in the 16th century, demanding that all non-noble males wear a wool cap on Sundays and holidays or risk a fine. This effectively obliged most men in the country to purchase hats, and while the law didn’t last long, the hat had become a unique element of the working man’s uniform. Throughout the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, the cap remained fashionable.
The nobility also embraced the flat cap as a casual hat choice for use at their country estates, although in more superior alternatives. It was frequently worn with tweed jackets for hunting, stalking, and shooting. Nonetheless, the flat hat is still identified with the working class in the United Kingdom.
The flat cap and newsboy cap were popular in the United Kingdom throughout the 1910s and 1920s. The folks who wore them when selling newspapers helped establish the name “newsboy,” although the hat was worn virtually widely by the working class.
Peaky Blinders has also served to solidify the flat cap’s reputation as a working-class wardrobe staple. As the Great Depression came in, the flat hat fell out of favour, yet it never completely vanished.
How to Put on a Flat Cap
A flat cap will complement your clothing regardless of your age or career if you appreciate traditional elegance. When appropriately sized, they complement virtually all facial types and may be worn to match casual, informal, or formal clothes. Here are some pointers on how to put on a flat cap:
- If you’re wearing a tweed cap, ensure that the cloth contrasts sufficiently with the material of your overcoat or vest. Designs that are too similar may clash, so choose a solid colour for one and a design for the other.
- Shape the brim to your liking. Many caps have a somewhat flat bill, which you may gently (but not too much!) shape to suit your head better and contour naturally about your face.
- Please don’t wear your flat hats backwards; Samuel L Jackson is the only one who can pull it off.
- Even if it’s fashioned for “summer” materials like linen, don’t wear a flat cap in the summer; it’s just not suited for that season. Instead, in the heat, wear a Panama hat.
- Wearing a flat cap unpinned or snapped is not part of the original design, even if the snap is functional, and it appears to be a more womanly look.
